About Sean C. Henry, PE

Sean C. Henry earned his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1995 from Missouri S&T. While in school and shortly thereafter, he worked as a summer engineering technician and then as a civil engineer for the City of Carbondale. In late 1996, he joined the consulting engineering firm of Asaturian Eaton & Associates in Carbondale, Ill. He was their first civil engineer with a degree and was instrumental in growing the civil engineering business for the firm. In the summer of 2006, he returned to the City of Carbondale and served as the city’s maintenance and environmental services manager until the spring of 2011 when he was appointed to be the city’s director of public works and city engineer. As director of public works, he is responsible for the administration, management, oversight and daily operations of 20 distinct operating divisions with an annual budget of $19 million and 85 full-time employees. Some of his responsibilities include: water and wastewater treatment; water distribution and wastewater collection; storm water management; streets and traffic signals; building maintenance and operation; refuse and recycling collection; cemeteries; forestry; equipment maintenance; engineering design and construction oversight of all city construction projects and review and permitting of development projects within the city. Henry is a member of the American Public Works Association (APWA), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). He is also chairman of the Professional Advisory Board for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Southern Illinois University. In that capacity, he has also served as a senior design project mentor.

Henry is an Eagle Scout and has been active in the Boy Scouts of America throughout his lifetime. He is currently guiding his two sons through Cub Scouts and has received several awards for his and his family’s dedication to scouting. He lives and works in Carbondale, Ill.
