Tom Wolff received his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Missouri S&T in 1970, his master’s degree in civil engineering in 1974 from Oklahoma State University and his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1985. Upon graduating from Rolla, Tom went to work for St. Louis District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a geotechnical engineer. After 15 years with the Corps, Tom attended Purdue, received his Ph.D., then joined the civil and environmental engineering department at Michigan State University. At Michigan State University he has been associate dean of undergraduate studies, interim chair of the civil engineering department and now, in part-time retirement, senior associate to the dean of engineering. During his tenure at Michigan State, Tom has excelled at teaching, research and service. He has received three department teaching awards and one from Chi Epsilon. Tom has been the principal investigator on 12 funded research projects, graduating seven Ph.D.’s. He has written chapters in four different engineering textbooks. Tom has authored many articles in refereed journals and publications from conference proceedings. At Michigan State, Tom was the Chi Epsilon faculty advisor for many years and has served on many college and university committees related to undergraduate education. Tom has served on several ASCE committees related to geotechnical engineering, and served on advisory committees to the Michigan Professional Engineering Board. He was also involved in three post-Katrina task groups. Long involved with Chi Epsilon, Tom currently serves as the National President of Chi Epsilon Honor Society. From the Corps of Engineers, Tom received the Commander’s Award for Public Service, also MSU’s College of Engineering’s Withrow Distinguished Service Award and the MSU ASCE Student Chapter William A. Bradley Award for outstanding faculty members. Tom and his wife, Kathleen, live in Okemos, Mich. They have two sons and one grandson.
